To display full errors and the stack trace of the error, you need to modify the web.config file for the Web Application which SharePoint is running on.

First you have to open the web.config file of the application C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\<port>

Change the following attributes in your web.config file:

  • Debug="True" instead of the default of Debug="False"
  • CallStack="True" instead of the default of CallStack="False"
  • CustomErrors="Off" instead of the default of CustomErrors="On"

Then open the following files:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\web.config
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\TEMPLATE\ADMIN\web.config

In both files set customErrors to Off.

Then again if you throw an error, you will see detailed description and source of error.
